DAUN PEN HISTORY
DUAN PENH is named after Grandma PENH. According to legend, 600 years ago, a wealthy widow who lived in a village next to Mekong River. Flooding then, one day, a tree trunk that had floated downstream became caught on a river bend close to her home. She examined it closely out of curiosity. Imagine her shock when she discovered five Buddha statues—four metal and one stone—within the hollow tree.
This, in her opinion, indicated that the Buddha desired a new residence. She then constructed a shrine for him at Wat Phnom, which eventually aided in the expansion of the capital city, Phnom Penh. At this manner, the temple in Daun Penh gradually gained fame and started to receive visitors.
Around year 1430, after Siamese (now Thai) army invaded Cambodia, King Ponhea Yat commanded the relocation of the previous capital, Angkor Thom, to a safer location close to Wat Phnom. And the new metropolis continued to expand over the years. The temple where her temple once stood is now adorned with a lovely statue of Daun Penh (Grandma Penh). Of course, the ancient temple has undergone numerous reconstructions and additions since then. All Cambodian are reminded of their ancestors’ matriarch, who discovered the floating tree trunk and the five Buddha sculptures, by Daun Penh’s statue. The capital city was founded as a result of her discovery.
