The process of obtaining Cambodian citizenship is not overly complex, but it is not easy either. There are three main ways to acquire Cambodian citizenship – through marriage, by birth and by meeting the specific requirements outlined in the Cambodian nationality law.
Those requirements are
- Good attitude and ethics, certified by the local municipal office.
- No criminal record.
- Certificate of permanent residence for 7 years, or 3 years if born in Cambodia.
- Stay in Cambodia at the time of application
- Ability to speak/write Khmer, know about the Cambodian history, “Live peacefully” with Khmer people as well as respect the Cambodian traditions and cultures.
- Physical/mental abilities do not endanger the nation.
In additions to all the requirements above, there are special circumstances where certain citizenships can be waived in Cambodia. Those special circumstances occurs when foreign investors contribute at least $1million USD, they could become a citizen without the 7-year residency requirement, if they stayed in Cambodia for at least 12 months. Furthermore, foreigners who donate at least $3 million USD to the state budget can obtain citizenship without the 7-year residency or doesn’t have to stay in the country while applying for the citizenship, though they must still meet the other criteria.
Becoming a Cambodian citizen is a lengthy process, but the benefits like full participation in Cambodian society and possible dual citizenship may be worthwhile. Citizenship can be obtained through marriage or naturalization, and some requirements can be waived in certain cases, but consulting a legal professional is advisable.
Note: The Cambodian law also allows for dual citizenships which mean you can hold citizenship from other different countries without having to give up your Cambodian citizenship.
